Voyager: How do you know if a compound kills cancer cells? How is it tested?

New compounds from nature are tested on cancer cells for their ability to kill them. If they selectively kill cancer cells without harming normal ones, they move to animal testing. Only then can they be called anti-cancer, not just cytotoxic.
