Germany is investing €86M in ACTRIS-D, a new research infrastructure to monitor aerosols, clouds, and trace gases. Coordinated by TROPOS, it will enhance air quality and climate forecasting and includes AWI’s lidar research in the Arctic.

During past glacial periods, Antarctic icebergs drifted much farther north due to extended sea ice and calmer seas, altering ocean stratification and affecting global climate patterns, including heat and CO₂ absorption in the Atlantic.
